Pj Loutherbourg 18th - Smoker Drawing
Philippe-Jacques DE LOUTHERBOURG (Strasbourg 1740 - Chiswick 1812)
Hunter Smoking a Pipe
Black chalk and stump drawing
9 x 8.2 cm
unframed
Signed lower left
In a period restoration frame and antique glass
Preparatory drawing for:
- Seated Man Smoking a Pipe, First plate of the Second series of figures drawn and engraved by P.J. Loutherbourg, Painter to the King (1767-1771), Yale Center for British Art, INV. B1977.14.11424
The drawing presented dates from the height of Loutherbourg's Parisian career, between 1767 and 1771, when he was Painter to the King. It is a preparatory drawing for the frontispiece of a series entitled Second series of figures drawn and engraved by P.J. Loutherbourg, Painter to the King.
The broad smile of this smoker, resting after the hunt, invites the viewer to come and delight in the figures created by the master. The small size of the drawing underscores its spirit of precious curiosity in the purest Dutch style, blurring the lines between caricature and illustration.
The engraving was probably made from this drawing using a mirror or a counterproof to preserve the original orientation.
Free and insured shipping within mainland France. Viewable and available for collection at my stall at the Saint-Ouen flea market.
