Olivier Ratody (ratodiarivony, 1894?) Malagasy Blacksmiths At Work

Artist: Olivier Ratody
Olivier RATODY (Ratodiarivony, 1894 – ?) Malagasy Blacksmiths at Work. Watercolor on silk paper (also known as soy paper), depicting a traditional blacksmithing scene in Madagascar. The composition shows two artisans: one operating the bellows of the forge, the other forging a red-hot blade on a rudimentary anvil. The artist accurately renders the gestures of the craft and the traditional tools. The drawing is distinguished by a fine, descriptive line, typical of documentary works produced by several Malagasy artists at the beginning of the 20th century to illustrate trades and daily life. Signed lower right: O. Ratody. Technique: watercolor on silk paper
