Covered Porcelain Flower Frog By Jacob Petit (1796-1868), Paris
An important polychrome porcelain flower frog, richly decorated with bouquets of flowers and birds in a naturalistic style, on a white ground enhanced with gilt. The baluster-shaped body rests on a serpentine base with rocaille decoration, entirely highlighted in gold. It has two twisted gilt handles. The openwork lid, allowing for floral arrangements, is adorned with a finely painted floral design and surmounted by a foliate finial. The very high quality of workmanship is characteristic of the productions of Jacob Petit, a famous 19th-century Parisian manufacturer renowned for its original forms and brightly colored decorations. A blue mark is present under the base. There is a small, barely visible chip on the rim, which is easily restorable.
