English-style Court Sword Circa 1800/10.
English-style court sword, circa 1800/10.
Chiseled steel hilt. Urn-shaped pommel, grip, and quillon worked with openwork diamond points and embellished with faceted steel marcasites. Guard joined to the side of the pommel by a beaded chain. Finely chased oval guard plate with openwork, also worked with openwork diamond points and embellished with faceted steel marcasites. Triangular blade with three fullers, engraved with trophies and gilt floral decorations on a blued ground on its first third. Good condition, the weapon has suffered very little from the ravages of time, beautiful patina. I note, however, some missing marcasites, see photos.
The court sword is a weapon belonging to a little-known category. At once a masculine jewel, a ceremonial weapon, a fencing weapon, a dueling weapon, a weapon of self-defense, and even an officer's weapon in a time when regulation weaponry was but a distant utopia.
