Atlas statue made by the Belgian Royal Museum for Art and History
A plaster statue of the Greek mythological figure Atlas, and an impressive life-size reproduction of a classical model
The museum has a world-renowned casting workshop in the Jubelpark. Since the 19th century, plaster copies have been made here of masterpieces from their own collection and other major museums
This example is in very good condition with only minor chips and a beautiful patina. It was probably made between 1920 and 1940.
A stamp from the KMKG on the plaster sculpture confirms that it is an official, high-quality cast, produced by the craftsmen of the museum workshop
Atlas is the titan who, in mythology, had to bear the vault of heaven on his shoulders
The pose, with his hands on his hips and his head bowed, emphasises the enormous physical burden and muscular tension
44 cm wide, 40 cm deep and 92 cm high
Total weight of 20 kg
Belgian decorative art from the interbellum
