Léon Brunard (1872-1931) Covered Potpourri Dish In Enameled Copper – Circa 1920
Artist: Leon Brunard
Léon Brunard (1872-1931) Covered Potpourri Jar in Enameled Copper – circa 1920. This charming covered potpourri jar in enameled copper is the work of Léon Brunard, an artist active in the South of France at the beginning of the 20th century, whose work skillfully blends metalwork and the art of enameling. The jar has a generous globular shape, enlivened by a stylized decoration with emerging Art Deco accents. The surface is covered with a deep red enamel with nuanced reflections, enhanced by motifs in cobalt blue and turquoise enamels, delicately highlighted with gold lines that structure the whole. The lid, also enameled, echoes this decoration in a harmonious composition and is finished with a patinated metal handle. An openwork metal ring, forming a decorative gallery, separates the body of the jar from the lid and allows the fragrance to diffuse, in accordance with the traditional function of potpourri. This piece perfectly illustrates the taste of French decorative arts in the 1920s, where the richness of the enamel colors contrasts with the understated elegance of the patinated metal. The piece is signed Brunard. Note: there are small chips of red enamel on the upper part of the lid, visible in the photographs, but these do not detract from the overall decorative appeal. A beautiful decorative object, representative of Léon Brunard's work, sought after for its vibrant enamels and early Art Deco aesthetic.
