This view depicts the Island of San Michele in the Venetian lagoon, identifiable by its cylindrical bell tower and the church of San Michele in Isola, a Renaissance masterpiece by Mauro Codussi. In the foreground, gondolas and boatmen are depicted with the swift, summary figures typical of the Guardesque macchiette tradition. The vivid palette, with its characteristic turquoise-green sky, is typical of Venetian genre painting between the 19th and 20th centuries.
