S.W. Clifford was a British painter active in the second half of the nineteenth century, working within the tradition of the Romantic landscape as established by the English school. His work demonstrates a confident handling of atmospheric effects and a sensitivity to filtered light through dense vegetation, in keeping with the conventions of Victorian landscape painting.
The painting depicts a wooded gorge through which a stream descends in cascades over moss-covered boulders, while in the background a lattice iron bridge crosses the torrent amid overhanging trees. The composition is built in depth, with a shadowed foreground opening gradually toward a luminous central zone. The brushwork is precise in the rendering of foliage and moving water, with a well-balanced palette of greens and browns.
