Clock In White Opaline Glass And Mercury-gilt Bronze, Charles X
France, circa 1825–1830. A mantel clock in the form of an antique vase, characteristic of the refined taste of the Charles X period and the Neoclassical aesthetic that marked the Restoration. The translucent white opaline glass body rests on a finely chased, mercury-gilt square base. On either side extend two gilt bronze handles in the form of stylized lion heads, executed with great finesse. The circular dial, framed by a rich floral mount in gilt bronze, features Roman numerals on a white enamel background, while its gilt guilloché center adds a further touch of elegance. The whole is surmounted by a flared neck also adorned with a gilt bronze mount. This clock testifies to the expertise of Parisian workshops in the first third of the 19th century, where the combination of opaline glass and gilt bronze was particularly prized for decorative objects intended for elegant interiors.
