Pair Of Mercury-gilt Bronze Candlesticks, Empire Period
France, Empire period, circa 1805–1815. A fine pair of chased and mercury-gilded bronze candlesticks, displaying an elegant and balanced composition typical of the Empire style. The circular bases are decorated with radiating motifs of finely worked palmettes and anthemions, inspired by antique ornamentation. The slender and harmoniously proportioned stems are enriched with chased decoration of foliate scrolls and delicate geometric patterns. The upper section is adorned with a fluted neck surmounted by a circular drip tray for collecting the wax. Through their refined design and meticulous execution, these candlesticks perfectly illustrate the neoclassical aesthetic in vogue during the reign of Napoleon I. The fineness of the chasing and the richness of the gilding testify to the remarkable skill of Parisian bronze workers of the early 19th century. Height: 27 cm
