A Pair Of Ormolu Consulate Period Candlesticks By Claude Galle (1759-1815)
Made of chiselled, patinated and gilded bronze, the shaft is topped with antique-style women's heads placed side by side, and the circular base features a stylised palmette motif.
This pair of candlesticks can be compared to a drawing, kept at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, for a torch project carried out in 1799 (see H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol. I, p. 326, fig. 5.1.6.). It is the same model as the one Galle delivered in 1804 for the Palace of Fontainebleau, described as ‘2 pairs [torches] with three heads’
