Pair Of Gilt Bronze Candlesticks - Empire Period - 1805–1815
France, Empire period, circa 1805–1815. A charming pair of finely chased and mercury-gilded bronze candlesticks, featuring an elegant, architecturally inspired silhouette. The circular bases are adorned with radiating palmette and anthemion motifs, typical of the Neoclassical decorative vocabulary. The slender stems are richly decorated with delicately chased foliate and geometric ornaments, while the upper section consists of a fluted neck surmounted by a circular drip tray for collecting the wax. The pair perfectly illustrates the refined aesthetic of the Empire style, largely inspired by Antiquity and particularly prized by Parisian bronze workers during the reign of Napoleon I. The fineness of the chasing and the quality of the gilding testify to the high level of mastery achieved in the production of French gilt bronzes at the beginning of the 19th century. Height: 27 cm
