Edmond Barbarroux (1882-1948) Le Baou Des Quatre Ouro, Dardennes District In Toulon.

Artist: Edmond Barbarroux (1882-1948)
A charming testament to the tranquility and natural beauty that surrounded the city of Toulon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Olive trees surround a thatched cottage, its chimney emitting a wisp of smoke, on a peaceful late-winter morning under the shade of a magnificent umbrella pine.
The gentle flow of a river "Le las", adds serenity, calm, and bucolic charm to the scene.
In the background, crowning the landscape, is the famous "mountain," the Baou des Quatre Ouro, not far from the Dardennes district, so dear to the inhabitants of Toulon.
The work is in good condition, with two old restorations on the back, invisible from the painting side.
It is presented in a gilt-framed, fluted frame measuring 113 cm x 154 cm, while the canvas itself measures 91 cm x 131 cm.
Two old labels on the back attest to an exhibition in 1930, and there is a period photograph of the artist in his studio in front of the painting.
A masterful and imposing work, remarkable for its size, by this fine artist from Toulon.

Son of a draftsman from the Toulon arsenal, originally from Garéoult, he was a student of Frédéric Montenard and Louis Cauvin. He first exhibited at the Salon National des Beaux-Arts, showing seascapes and landscapes.
In 1903, he exhibited in Paris at the Colonial Exhibition, where the State acquired some of his works for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in Marseille at the International Exhibition, where he won a Grand Prize.
He also received a Grand Prize at the Lyon International Exhibition in 1904 and a medal at the Avignon International Exhibition in 1906, where the State purchased two canvases, "Le Cannet du Luc" and "La Vieille Garde."
He was frequently awarded prizes or prizes at various exhibitions in Paris and Provence, including Hyères, Valence, Bordeaux, Toulon, and Bastia.
He exhibited from 1907 to 1939 at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member, and where he exhibited: Madrague au Levant (1926), Coup de mistral en Méditerranée (1928), Derniers rayons sous les Pesquiers, Hyères (1934), Lumière d'août (1936), L'Estérel et Vallée de Belgentier (1939).
A professor in Toulon at the Rouvière school and at the École des Beaux-Arts, of which he became director in 1930, succeeding Gabriel Amoretti, he was appointed Painter of the Navy in 1924 and received the Legion of Honour in 1931.
He died in Toulon on June 12, 1948.
On October 2, 1924, he was appointed official painter of the Navy and, in 1931, made a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
Unjustly forgotten since then, a retrospective exhibition of these works was held at the Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture in his hometown in 1974.
