Artist: Fernand Detaille (1875-1954)
Vintage silver gelatin print, circa 1910. Portrait of Frédéric Mistral by Fernand Détaille. Fernand Détaille (1875–1954) was a French photographer, illustrator, and publisher, known for taking over and running the photographic studio founded by Félix Tournachon, known as Nadar, in Marseille, establishing himself as Nadar's successor in the Phocaean city. A retrospective, "Marseille as seen by the Détaille family," is on display until October 31, 2026, at the Marseille History Museum. Frédéric Mistral (1830–1914) was a Provençal poet and lexicographer, famous for his commitment to the Occitan language. Born in Maillane, he published his masterpiece, "Mirèio," in 1859 and wrote "Tresor dóu Felibrige," a major dictionary of the Provençal language. Founder of the Félibrige movement in 1854, he campaigned for the Occitan cultural renaissance. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904, he devoted part of his fortune to creating the Museon Arlaten in Arles. He died in 1914, leaving a literary legacy that remains vibrant in Provence.
