Jean-désiré Bascoulès: Landscape Of A Fortified Village In The Maghreb
Artist: Bascoulès
A fine Orientalist painter, he was born in Perpignan in 1886 and died in Montpellier in 1976. He studied at the Beaux-Arts schools of Bordeaux and then Paris, and in 1924 won the Prix Mordant for his painting of the Grand Erg desert. He also received a grant to reside at the Villa Abd el Tif. He settled permanently in Algiers and won the Grand Prix Artistique of Algeria in 1930. The painting I am offering dates from this period; he painted Algiers and the surrounding southern regions, and several of his works are in the Algiers Museum of Fine Arts. This painting, the second on the list, is part of the estate of a collector of Orientalist paintings. The painting measures 37 x 45 cm.
