The Centaur Krotos - Bronze Circa 1950 - 60cm - Eiji Yoshida (1911-87) #822
Artist: Eiji Yoshida (1911-87) Japon
This bronze is a reduced version of a monumental sculpture commissioned in 1949 from the artist for the creation of the Centaur Garden Hanshin Racecourse (Hippodrome). Born in Osaka in 1911, Yoshida studied under Kitamura Seibo at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. From his teaching, he developed a taste for powerful and expressive forms. The influence of Bourdelle (whose style influenced Japan in the early 20th century) is also evident. He exhibited regularly at salons and participated in exhibitions at the Kyoto Imperial Memorial Museum. His most famous creation is the monumental centaur of 1949. In 1964, he produced medals for the Tokyo Olympics.
- The centaur Krotos, son of Pan and Eupheme, is depicted drawing a bow, as he is the embodiment of the constellation Sagittarius. Renowned as an excellent hunter and devoted admirer of the Muses, he is said to have invented the bow for hunting animals. The Muses asked Zeus to place him among the stars, making Krotos the constellation Sagittarius.
