Léon Brunard (1872–1931) Patriotic Cross “god Protect France – 1914”
Léon Brunard (1872–1931) Patriotic Cross “God Protects France – 1914” Gilt Bronze and Enamels A rare and moving patriotic cross in gilt bronze adorned with polychrome enamels, made at the beginning of the First World War and bearing the inscription “God Protects France – 1914.” The cross features a richly detailed decoration: the arms are covered with a deep red enamel enhanced with gilt motifs and punctuated with small turquoise enamel cabochons. In the center, a circular medallion depicts the face of Christ against a background of vibrant blue enamel, surrounded by the patriotic inscription recalling the dramatic context of the beginning of the conflict. The gilt bronze mount has a flowing, neo-Gothic form, decorated with stylized motifs evoking flames or rays, reinforcing the spiritual and protective character of the object. This cross is signed on the side by Léon Brunard, a Lyon-based artist known primarily as a painter, but also active as a ceramicist and enameller, which explains the high quality of the enamel work visible on this piece. Patriotic objects created at the beginning of the First World War are now highly sought-after historical artifacts, blending faith, patriotism, and decorative art. With its striking aesthetic, the quality of its enamels, and the artist's signature, this cross is a decorative, historical, and collectible object. Very good overall condition.
