Louis XVI Period Turin-style Console Table
An elegant carved, polychrome, and gilded wooden console table, resting on four tapered and fluted legs. The front opens with a wide central drawer. The carved and gilded decoration is organized around a handled urn, flanked by symmetrical foliate garlands ending in circular rosettes. The frames are highlighted with beaded friezes typical of the neoclassical decorative vocabulary. The sides feature molded rectangular panels, centered with a gilded foliate motif. The piece is decorated in a polychrome scheme of Pompeian red and ivory, enhanced with gilt leaf. This style is characteristic of Piedmontese production from the late 18th century. The piece is topped with a wooden slab painted to resemble breccia marble. This console table is part of the tradition of furniture produced for the aristocratic interiors of Turin. Comparable pieces are preserved in the collections of the Palazzo Reale di Turin and the Reggia di Venaria Reale, testifying to the taste for neoclassical polychrome decoration in Piedmont at the end of the 18th century.
