The capercaillie, or wood grouse, is a large gallinaceous bird that lives in coniferous or mixed forests in cold climates.
This habitat is found mainly in the mountains of Central Europe but also in the plains of Northern and Eastern Europe and Siberia. In France, it has disappeared from the Alps and is still present in a few regions where it is becoming quite rare (Cévennes, Vosges).
