Marble Bas-relief "female Face" - 17th Century

Marble bas-relief "Female Face" - 17th century

Elegant marble bas-relief depicting a female face, viewed from the front, characterized by harmonious features and a rich, wavy hairstyle with ornamental elements.

The face is framed by decorative details featuring classical motifs, including a necklace and stylized draperies.

The work displays meticulous craftsmanship, with softly modeled features and deep curls in the hair.

The marble displays a natural patina of age and slight traces of wear, accentuating its decorative appeal and materiality.

The back is rough and features a mounting hole, suggesting its original use as an architectural or wall decoration.

The back shows rough, deep chisel marks (normal in ancient works), traces of masonry or lime, as it was certainly part of a building.

On the upper part, you can see the ancient (irregular) fixing hole.

An interesting and relatively rare iconographic detail that increases collectors' interest is the combination of an idealized female face and an architectural "mask" structure within a circle.

Architectural masks (especially Renaissance ones) typically depict:
*male faces
*grotesque figures
*deities or mythological figures In our case, however, we have a serene, idealized female face, almost portrait-like, inserted into a circular decorative composition.

This combination is less common.

The hair is styled in deep, flowing waves that expand laterally, almost like ornamental elements.

This type of hairstyle:
* A graceful portrait and decoration
* Creates an almost architectural effect

The sculpted pearl necklace with separate beads is a curious element because:
* It recalls noble Renaissance female portraits
* It is less common in simple architectural elements.

This detail suggests that the artist was not simply creating an ornament, but a face with the dignity of an allegorical portrait.

Perfect as a decorative element for classical settings, studies, antique collections, or as a statement piece for interior design.
