Painting, Sketch, Oil On Canvas “madonna Del Rosario” - 19th Century

Painting, sketch, oil on canvas “Madonna del Rosario” - 19th century

This painting represents the “Madonna del Rosario”, a very common subject in Catholic sacred art, especially between the 16th and 18th centuries.

The canvas groups together in a pyramidal display the Virgin Mary surrounded by Saint Dominic, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Vincent Ferrer, Saint Rosalia and Saint Oliva.

Some key elements that confirm this identification: The Madonna in the center, seated on a throne, with the Child Jesus in her arms.
The Child holds out a rosary towards the Saint, a typical gesture in representations of the Madonna del Rosario.
Saint Dominic (in the black and white habit of the Dominicans) and Saint Catherine of Siena or another Dominican saint are present.
A pair of Angels, to the right of the Virgin, hold up a basket with crowns of flowers.
At the bottom there are symbolic elements such as the skull and the cross (memento mori), olive branches and lilies (symbols of peace and purity).

This iconography is linked to the Battle of Lepanto (1571), after which Pope Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Madonna of the Rosary and made this devotion very popular, especially among the Dominicans.

In the Oratory of the Rosary of Santa Cita in Palermo there is the painting of the Madonna of the Rosary above the altar, it was made by Carlo Maratta in 1695.

The state of conservation is excellent, the painting is in first canvas, the colors are vivid, the pictorial quality is excellent.
