Large portrait, dating from around 1900, of a young girl, probably the artist's daughter Phyllis, wearing a pink shawl and bow. Oil on canvas by Samuel Luke Fildes. A beautiful and intimate illustration of Fildes's work depicting his daughter Phyllis, the lower portion of the painting being intentionally left unfinished. Fildes initially worked as an illustrator, producing caricatures for Vanity Fair and the covers for several Charles Dickens novels. He later entered the Royal Academy where he exhibited frequently. Presented in a dark and gilt wood frame with the artist's inscription. The work is unsigned and was therefore intended to be a personal portrait, a treasured memento for the artist or his family.
