Antique Thai Gilt Bronze Reclining Temple Deer Pair, Buddhist Altar Figures, C19th
A beautiful, symbolic pair of antique Thai gilt bronze reclining deer, dating from the 19th century.
The deer are depicted resting gracefully with their legs folded beneath their bodies and their heads raised in an alert yet serene pose. Each animal displays finely modelled antlers, delicately shaped ears and engraved decorative details across the body. They retain their original gilding with a warm and attractive patina.
In Buddhist iconography a pair of deer represents the Deer Park at Sarnath, the sacred place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. In temple settings the deer are traditionally placed on either side of the Dharmachakra (Wheel of the Law), symbolising the beginning of Buddhist teaching.
Such sculptures formed part of temple altar arrangements and are characteristic of Thai Buddhist art of the Rattanakosin period.
The figures are cast in bronze and finished with gilding applied over a red lacquer ground, a traditional technique used in Southeast Asian religious sculpture.
Elegant, decorative and rich in symbolism, this matching pair represents a classic motif of Buddhist temple art.
