Louis XV Period Commode, Eastern French Work, 18th Century.
A charming Louis XV period commode, a regional piece from eastern France dating from the mid-18th century. Beautifully proportioned, this commode features an elegant curved front and sides, resting on four cabriole legs ending in bronze sabots. It opens with two wide drawers in the front. The piece is constructed on a softwood and walnut frame. The front and sides are adorned with marquetry of native woods set against a background of walnut veneer with highly decorative grain. The decoration consists of flowing scrolls forming elegant frames within which stylized floral compositions unfold. The cabinetmaker used various local woods—walnut, maple, boxwood, plum, and green-stained maple—to create flowers, foliage, and branches, resulting in a subtle and highly decorative polychrome design. The sides are also inlaid with floral bouquets framed by scrolls, echoing the decorative vocabulary of the front. The commode is topped with its original molded blue Turquin marble slab, which shows an old restoration at the front right corner. The bronze ornaments, drawer pulls, and keyhole escutcheons are original. The piece is in very good condition. The frame is entirely original, and the commode has been French polished, which particularly highlights the wood grain and the fineness of the marquetry. Note: the lock on the lower drawer is missing. Through its design, the use of native woods, and its marquetry decoration of scrolling foliage and floral bouquets, this commode reflects the tradition of regional production in eastern France during the 18th century, particularly that of the cabinetmakers of Nancy.
