The work :

A sketch of another region of the Middle East : Turkey, Palestine, or Egypt.
This captivating oil on canvas is a remarkable foray by Henri Royer into Orientalism, a theme he treats here with striking modernity and freedom of touch.
Far from his usual Breton portraits, he delivers a vibrant scene, laden with history and palpable dramatic intensity.
It is structured around the central figure of a nude woman, bathed in zenithal light that contrasts with the deep shadows of the shoppers and spectators in the background.
This lighting creates a powerful focal point, accentuating the vulnerability and dignity of the subject.
The technique is resolutely Impressionist and textured. Royer uses a generous brushstroke, almost Divisionist in places, to build up the volumes. The impasto on the fabrics and flesh gives the scene an almost sculptural presence.
The artist plays on a bold chromatic contrast : the bright red of a turban energizes the ochre and earthy tones of the crowd, while a deep emerald green in the foreground anchors the composition. What makes this painting particularly appealing is the balance between the academic mastery of the drawing (visible in the pose of the central figure) and the spontaneity of the execution.

The Artist : Henri Paul Royer (Nancy 1869 - Paris 1938)

He was a French painter, draftsman, and illustrator, known for his portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes, particularly in Brittany and Lorraine.
Henri Paul Royer was the son of Jules Royer, founder of one of the most important lithographic printing houses in Nancy. Immersed in the art world, Royer enrolled at the Nancy School of Fine Arts, where he met Émile Friant.
He exhibited his first works at the Nancy Salon.
He undertook a study trip to the Netherlands with Émile Friant. Upon his return in 1888, Henri Royer decided to continue his training in Paris at the Académie Julian, where he studied under Jules Lefebvre, François Flameng, and Benjamin-Constant. Henri Royer exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français from 1890 onwards.
He quickly made a name for himself as a portraitist and genre painter.
His style, classical and figurative, is rooted in the academic tradition, with great mastery of drawing and a particular attention to light and color. Royer traveled frequently, whether to South or North America, as well as throughout Europe, Sicily, Italy, Greece, and the Middle East, but also to Brittany (Audierne and Douarnenez), where he produced a large number of portraits of fishermen, peasant women, and scenes of local life.
He also painted landscapes of Lorraine, and during the First World War, he created scenes related to the conflict. He received numerous distinctions and awards, including the gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1907.
Royer taught at the Académie Julian, where he trained generations of artists, both French and foreign.
His studio was renowned for its rigor and the quality of its teaching in drawing and painting. His work is characterized by the precision of his drawing, the psychological depth of his portraits, and a focus on scenes of rural and maritime life.
His paintings reflect both a profound humanism and great formal elegance.
He enjoyed painting during his various travels and stays abroad.
His works are featured in numerous museums: Paris :
Louvre Museum,
Orsay Museum, Nancy Museum,
Brest Museum of Fine Arts,
Quimper Museum of Fine Arts,
Rio de Janeiro Museum of Fine Arts
