Patriotic Flower Clip Brooch, Vermeil, G.lecomte, 1940s
This large two-pin clip brooch (fur clip) features three large flowers in the colors of France. During the Second World War, under occupation, it was preferable to display patriotism discreetly! The blue, white, and red of the flag are thus represented by the monochrome image of the flowers used. Red is represented by a poppy in the center. It is surmounted on the left by a cornflower for blue and on the right by a daisy for white.
The brooch is made of gilt silver, worked with pliers and a hammer.
High-end jewelers used also the image of a bird set with rubies, sapphires, and diamonds, enclosed in a gold cage. After the Liberation, the same bird had its cage transformed, with the door opened.
Unsigned work by the silversmith Georges René Lecomte. Hallmarked with a boar's head on the back of the leaf. Beautiful antique patina, firm clip spring, naturalistic details.
PERFECT CONDITION, France, 1940s.
