Saint Sebastian – Early Gothic Monoxyl Oak Sculpture with Traces of Polychromy – Southern Europe – late 12th / 13th century

This striking medieval sculpture represents Saint Sebastian, one of the most venerated Christian martyrs, traditionally depicted pierced by arrows.

The figure is carved from a single block of oak using the monoxyl technique, a method widely employed in medieval religious sculpture intended for churches and devotional spaces. With its substantial height (87 cm) and powerful volumes, the work was likely part of a liturgical setting.

The sculpture displays a strong frontal presence and expressive stylization, typical of the transitional period between late Romanesque and early Gothic art. The elongated body, with simplified yet powerful forms, reflects a sculptural language focused on spiritual presence rather than anatomical realism.

The face shows the characteristic stylization of 12th–13th century carving: a long straight nose, a simply incised mouth and a schematic treatment of the eyes, giving the figure a contemplative and almost ascetic expression.

The hair is rendered in large compact masses framing the face, a formal vocabulary frequently encountered in late Romanesque and early Gothic sculpture.

Several perforations visible on the torso most likely correspond to the original arrow impacts, the traditional iconographic attribute of Saint Sebastian’s martyrdom.

The deep patina of the oak, together with natural wear and age-related alterations, gives the work a powerful historical presence.

By its technique, stylistic features and iconography, this sculpture represents a rare surviving example of medieval sacred carving from Southern Europe at the transition between the 12th and 13th centuries.
