Opera Glasses - A Curiosity
Opera glasses in brass and horn, signed on the bezel, in their original red leather case.
First half of the 19th century.
Small crack on the horn. The glasses were made by Jean Gabriel Chevallier (1778-1848), a leading French optician of his time. He worked under the name "Maison de l'Ingénieur Chevallier" at 1 Tour de l'Horloge, opposite the flower market, from 1796 to 1842 before moving to 15 Place du Pont Neuf in Paris, where the business was taken over by his son-in-law and daughter.
Height of the glasses: 11 cm open, 6.5 cm closed, diameter 5.5 cm. Cup: height 7 cm, diameter 6.5 cm.
