Head Of Buddha, Gilt Bronze, Thailand, 19th-20th Century.
Head of Shakyamuni Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), founder of Buddhism, cast in bronze using the lost-wax technique. The Buddha's face is depicted in a state of profound tranquility and meditation (Samadhi). The closed eyelids, shaped like lotus petals, suggest inner concentration. The characteristic elongated earlobes allude to the Buddha's royal lineage and the heavy jewelry he wore as Prince Siddhartha before renouncing material possessions. The entire head is covered with dense, spiraling curls resembling snail shells. According to legend, these are meant to protect the Buddha's head from the sun during meditation.
Thailand, 19th-20th century.
Height 32 cm (24.5 cm without base), width 15.5 cm, depth 16.5 cm.
Good condition, with visible wear to the gilding. Missing element: flame (Ketumala) at the top of the head.
