Champagne
Portrait of a young woman depicted in bust length, tasting a glass of champagne. The figure adopts an elegant and confident attitude, the glass raised to her lips, in keeping with a feminine iconography characteristic of the Belle Époque. The delicately modelled face, abundant hair, and flowing dress contribute to a refined and alluring staging, designed to immediately capture the viewer’s attention.
The composition corresponds to an original illustration with a clear advertising purpose, very likely intended for the promotion of a luxury product, probably for a major champagne house. The choice of subject, the controlled expression of the model, and the careful treatment of the female bust fully reflect the visual codes of the Belle Époque, widely employed in the promotion of festive beverages.
The work is attributed to Albert Matignon, an artist active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his elegant illustrations and his contribution to the advertising imagery of his time. Two female portraits of a similar type, featuring comparable bust-length subjects, were acquired by the Lefèvre-Utile company for use as advertising illustrations on posters promoting its products. Through the treatment of the face, the confident attitude of the model, and the overall aesthetic of the composition, the present work clearly belongs to the same iconographic and stylistic register and should be compared with these known advertising works by Matignon for the LU company.
