Hendrik Meyer (1744-1793) Ice Pleasures With Landscape
Artist: Hendrik Meijer (1744-1793)
Hendrik Meijer (or Hendrick de Meyer II) (Amsterdam, baptized September 30, 1744 – London, buried March 6, 1793) was a painter, draughtsman, engraver, watercolorist, and wallpaper designer from the Northern Netherlands. His work is characterized by a combination of architectural scenes, figure studies, and decorative art. He trained and influenced a whole generation of young artists. A versatile artist, Meijer produced landscapes, genre scenes, interiors, winter scenes, and topographical scenes, often in an Italianate style. His work includes oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and engravings. A gouache winter landscape depicting Dutch skaters, a stall on the ice, and, in the background, a village with a church bathed in winter sunlight.
A very fine work by Meijer, who specialized particularly in landscapes. Many of his works offered for sale in recent years are drawings and sketches. It is rare to find such a beautiful winter landscape. Signed lower right: "Meyer me fecit".
Framed under glass.
Condition: Fresh colors and in good condition. A few minor paint scratches in places.
