*Louis Icart (1888-1950) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. Impressed by his talent as a draftsman, his aunt brought him to Paris: she owned Maison Valmont, a prominent millinery firm during the Belle Époque. Louis Icart was then introduced to the world of illustration for the fashion press. He drew for the periodical "La Critique théâtrale" and for haute couture catalogs. Trained in engraving, he presented his original works at the Salon des Humoristes: his portraits of women, Parisian women, began to captivate the public; he was compared to Paul-César Helleu and Manuel Robbe. During the First World War, Icart served as a pilot, flying several missions, but he never stopped drawing. In 1920, he exhibited at the Simonson Gallery in Paris, and then, in 1922, at the Belmaison Gallery in New York, showing more than thirty canvases in an Art Deco style. Following this exhibition, Icart's engravings enjoyed some success in America until 1932. His oeuvre comprises more than five hundred engravings. He also contributed illustrations to some thirty books, a good number of them erotic. During the Occupation, Icart created an engraved series entitled "The Exodus." His work fell into oblivion after the war, but was revived when, in the 1970s, some of his early paintings were discovered in the attic of an art school.
