Born in Versailles on November 10, 1890, to a father who was a stockbroker's clerk, Pierre-Albert Leroux began his artistic training at the Versailles municipal drawing school. In 1910, he applied to the École des Beaux-Arts. For three years he studied under Cormon and Laurens, the two great masters of history painting.
Called up for military service, he completed his service as a musician in 1913.
But on August 2, 1914, he was sent as a stretcher-bearer to the 1st Engineer Regiment, 22nd Company. He remained in this role throughout the war.
