In The Subway, Watercolor Drawing, André Dignimont (1891-1965)
A friend of many writers, he skillfully illustrated works by Colette (Mitsou, L'ingénue Libertine), Pierre Mac Orlan, Francis Carco, and others.
The beauty of the female form was a particular source of inspiration for him, but his illustrations are diverse, charming, sometimes ironic, and always full of freshness.
His watercolor drawings, several examples of which are held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, possess the old-fashioned charm of a working-class, slightly roguish Paris of the 1920s and 30s.
He also proved himself a skilled designer of sets and costumes for opera and theater, not to mention a few acting roles in films by Jean Renoir and Sacha Guitry.
This skillfully executed drawing, in ink, wash, and watercolor highlights, may have been intended as an illustration for a book.
It is signed in ink in the lower right corner.
