A quick yet refined sketch by Gaston Guignard. Guignard, born in Bordeaux, first studied law in Paris, but he abandoned this path to devote himself to painting, becoming a pupil of Jules-Jean Ferry, then Henri Gervex and Ferdinand Humbert. An accomplished artist in various genres, Guignard specialised in agricultural themes and landscapes. He was close to the movements of naturalism and realism (Bastien-Lepage, Millet, Breton, etc.). His works are preserved in many French museums, notably in Bordeaux and at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Guignard's drawings are characterized by an elegant angularity.
