Empire Period Portico Clock In Black Marble And Gilt Bronze. 19th Century
Empire Period Portico Clock in Black Marble and Gilt Bronze – Early 19th Century. An elegant Empire period portico clock, French work from the early 19th century, circa 1805-1820. It rests on a rectangular black marble base richly adorned with a finely chased gilt bronze frieze depicting mythological scenes. Four gilt bronze toupie feet complete the piece. The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is set within a gilt bronze mount with beaded decoration. It is supported by two detached black marble columns with chased bronze bases and capitals. The decoration is typically Imperial: an eagle with outstretched wings at the top, wreaths and laurel garlands, a prominent eagle's head mascaron, and a radiant sun pendulum. Original Parisian round movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell. Note: Two or three small bronze elements with minor losses are located on the left and right sides (see photos). The marble is in good condition. Antique mercury gilding with a beautiful period patina. Period: Early 19th century. Style: Empire. Origin: France. Materials: Black marble and gilt bronze. Height: 54 cm. Width: 38 cm. Movement: Mechanical with key.
