Vallauris Flower Vase In Mixed Clay, Signed Gerbino (1876-1966) - France, Circa 1950

An elegant small spherical vase, sometimes called a flower-poke, made of Vallauris ceramic, dating from the mid-20th century around 1950. It was created using the emblematic technique of mixed clays (or mosaic of colored clays) developed by master ceramist Jean Gerbino. This piece features a complex and vibrant decoration in a harmony of azure blue, white, black, and brown, forming geometric patterns and intricate interlacing designs. The upper part has a central opening and six peripheral openings, allowing for the creation of floral arrangements. Gerbino's work is unique: each motif is achieved by assembling different blocks of clay, colored throughout, then sliced and inlaid. This process, which requires exceptional technical mastery, creates a mosaic-like visual texture that has brought international renown to the Vallauris workshop - France - signed "Gerbino" and stamped "Vallauris (AM)" under the base.
