Solid Silver Ciborium – Spain, Early 17th Century
Solid silver ciborium – Spain, early 17th century.
Solid silver ciborium resting on a wide, molded, stepped circular base, supporting a turned, highly architectural baluster-shaped stem, punctuated by successive rings and projections.
Description:
The cup, of fine proportions, presents a sober and powerful profile. The interior of the cup, as well as that of the lid, is entirely fire-gilded (vermeil), in accordance with liturgical practice, to preserve the dignity of the Eucharist.
The lid, with its cyma molding, is surmounted by a hemispherical dome topped with a cast cross depicting Christ on the cross.
The cross, still in the Mannerist style, has trefoil ends and a dotted relief decoration, characteristic of Iberian production from the early 17th century.
The whole is distinguished by the purity of its lines, the balance of its proportions, and the quality of the turned stem, typical of post-Renaissance Spanish goldsmithing, continuing the models of the late 16th century.
Height: 27.5 cm Weight: 582 g
Condition:
Very good condition. Signs of wear consistent with age. Interior gilding is well preserved. An authentic and understated piece, representative of early Spanish liturgical forms, sought after for the quality of its silver and the precision of its design.
