Large Pair Of Candle Little Bacchus 19th Century XIXe
Highly decorative, a striking combination of
white and gold, they are crafted from Carrara white marble and gilt
bronze. Each piece rises on a stepped circular base, encircled by a
foliate molding; a finely fluted cylindrical sleeve stands atop this
base, adorned with a floral garland in high relief: blooming roses,
small flowers, veined leaves, all tied with ribbons whose ends cascade
down.
The upper section depicts these "little Bacchuses," nude, captured in contrasting poses: one seated, the other standing. Their hair is entwined with vine leaves and small berries. Arms of light, emanating from the sculpted group, flow out in graceful curves, initially tapering, then widening as they approach the candle sockets. Their meticulously crafted decoration blends veined acanthus leaves, vine tendrils, and grape clusters in relief: a vocabulary of abundance that subtly evokes the Bacchic imagery of the figures. Napoleon III period, circa 1860
