JAPAN - Edo Period (1603-1868). Half-mask of a samurai known as a "Mempo," made of wrought iron. Features a pronounced chin, movable nose, prominent brown horsehair mustache, pierced nostrils, a red lacquered upper lip, visible gilded teeth, and sweat holes under the chin. The interior is lacquered red (minor losses). Includes a five-tiered "Yodare-kake" (gore) in black lacquered wrought iron with blue silk braiding and a black lacquered reverse. Dimensions: 25 x 18 x 13 cm. Sold with its stand. Dimensions with stand: 39 x 18 x 16 cm.
