An interesting serpentine inkwell with a spiral gadrooned design, decorated on the lid with five lava stone cameos in various colors.
The round serpentine base is gadrooned in a spiral pattern.
It is hollowed out to hold two glass inkwells with brass rims and two brass pen holders.
The lid, with its wide handle, is adorned with five lava stone cameos mounted in brass rims, depicting the heads of Roman emperors and illustrious figures.
The whole piece is harmonious and of superb quality. An Italian work dating from the mid-19th century, and undoubtedly a souvenir of the Grand Tour.
A beautiful and highly decorative collector's inkwell, probably originating from the Naples region, from which 19th-century travelers often returned with this type of lava stone cameo, very fashionable at the time.
Very good overall condition Note that the cameo set in the socket has a slot on the upper right side.
An ideal inkwell to adorn an Empire-style desk or your library.
