Pair Of Candelabra With Winged Victories, Attributed To Pierre-philippe Thomire (1751-1843)
Artist: Attribués à Pierre-philippe Thomire (1751-1843)
A pair of five-flame winged Victory candelabra. Empire style.
Attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843).
Finely chased gilt bronze with a black patina.
The central body is in the form of Nike Canefora resting on a globe.
The arms are designed as cornucopias surrounding a central torch.
The rectangular bases are made of malachite; their decoration features a gilt bronze crown containing a star (the symbol of Moscow) and adorned with quivers and ribbons.
There is a strong resemblance to the preparatory drawing by Charles Percier (1746-1838) created for the decoration of Josephine Bonaparte's boudoir (Paris, 1802) and to the winged Victory candelabra signed by Thomire (Paris, 1810) now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Total height 75 cm
