The immense artist that was Peña (15 pages in "Cien años de pintura en España," where most other artists receive only a few lines), was prolific and eclectic.
His solid training in Madrid, followed by his time in Rome where he befriended Benlliure and Sorolla, gave him the fine technique that earned him numerous commissions and awards at his exhibitions at the Madrid Salon of Fine Arts.
Thanks to #lagatacuriosacolecciona, I now know that our painting, from his best period, depicting a sunny village bustling with laundry hanging from windows and small figures, was not painted in the Province of Soria, his birthplace, but in San Esteban, near Muros de Nalon in Asturias.
This area was an important artistic colony at the end of the 19th century, and he was one of its most illustrious representatives. Please feel free to request additional photos or information by email or phone.
