"European Lacquered Glass Cooler - 18th Century"
A lacquered wooden glass cooler (or glass cooler), European work from the 18th century. Circular in shape with a cut and scalloped rim, it features a deep green background enlivened by oval cartouches with a garnet red ground, finely decorated with Chinese-inspired landscapes: pavilions, stylized trees, birds, and plant motifs enhanced with gilding. The metal handles on the sides allow for easy handling during serving. This type of piece was intended to hold glasses or bottles surrounded by ice, on a formal dining table. The polychrome and gilt decoration, now delicately patinated, displays a network of old crackles typical of 18th-century European lacquer. Condition is consistent with its age: wear, small losses and lifting of the varnish, alterations to the handles, cracks, and signs of use. The piece nevertheless retains a beautiful presence and authentic charm. An 18th-century work, in the style of Martin varnishes and the Chinese aesthetic then very fashionable in French decorative arts.
