"1749 Edition: The Work Of Mr. De Crebillon, Father, In Three Volumes "
Prosper Jolyot de Crebillon (1674-1762), nicknamed Crebillon père to distinguish him from his son, the famous Parisian gossip columnist of the second half of the 18th century, was an important playwright who created an intense body of work, without imitating the great Racine. He was patronized by Madame de Pompadour and entered the Academy in 1731. Highly regarded by actors, they organized a funeral service in his honor, which, defying religious prohibitions and scandal, was attended by a large number of academicians and theater professionals.
