Constant Rey - Millet / Still Life 1928 / Painting On Glass

Artist: Constant Rey-millet
Constant Rey-Millet (1905-1959) was a writer and painter close to the French cultural elite, a friend of Jean Paulhan and Francis Ponge, and acquainted with Giacometti, Picasso, and Severini.

After studying at the Geneva School of Fine Arts, he began his artistic journey in his native Savoy, initially in a style reminiscent of De la Fresnaye. Rey-Millet developed a second style after traveling to Florida and painting alongside the Seminole Indians. His third period coincided with his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

His work was noticed by the gallery owner Pierre Loeb, a friend of the Surrealists, who exhibited it in 1947.

This particular painting is especially interesting due to its technique. The paint is applied directly to the glass, resulting in a smooth and vibrant finish. Another advantage is that the work has remained intact in its original frame, which is evident from the paint that outlines the nails.

The work is signed on the back and dated 1928.
