Terracotta Sculpture - The Secret Of The Tomb - A. Meulien Aft St Marceaux Vanitas Memento Mori
Terracotta bas-relief depicting "The Genius Guarding the Secret of the Tomb." The original statue, sculpted in the round from marble, was created in 1879 by René de Saint-Marceaux.
The bas-relief is signed A. Meulien, possibly for André Roux-Meulien (1878–1901), a student who graduated from the Architecture Section of the École des Beaux-Arts in July 1901 and died in September 1901. If the attribution were confirmed, this terracotta would then have a particular resonance with the personal life of this young artist who died at the age of 23.
