A Solid Silver And Vermeil Snuffbox From The 18th Century. Mid-18th Century, Provincial?

Superb solid silver snuffbox dating from the 18th century.

The snuffbox has a beautiful, scalloped shape typical of the Rococo style, fashionable during the reign of Louis XV.

The base of the snuffbox is made of plain silver, domed to fit the shape of the hand. The rim is elegantly molded.

The lid is decorated with repoussé work featuring a rich design of flowers, a Rococo shell, trellises, and scrolls.

The interior is gilt silver (vermeil).

The box is not hallmarked but has been acid-tested.

The absence of a hallmark makes formal identification difficult, but the style, decoration, and technique are typical of 18th-century French production. It may be a provincial piece, unhallmarked to avoid taxation.

A charming box that is a beautiful testament to the art of living in the 18th century. This snuffbox has a beautiful, slender, and scalloped shape which, along with the floral decoration, makes it very elegant.
