Joseph Cuvelier (1833–1870) was a French sculptor, best known for his animal works and his friendship with Edgar Degas, to whom he taught the basics of sculpture. He died during the Franco-Prussian War. His bronze works, particularly depictions of horses, are now held in museums such as the Musée d'Orsay.
The foundry: Henri (or H.) Luppens & Cie was a renowned 19th-century Brussels art foundry specializing in the production of art bronzes. Based in Saint-Gilles, on rue de Danemark, this company was renowned for the quality of its pieces, often stamped "H. Luppens & Cie". Its creations included furniture, decorative objects and sculptures, often in the Louis XVI or Art Nouveau style.
