"Fountain Spittoon"
A fountain spittoon representing a lion's head in Verona marble, northern Italy, early 18th century. Carved from beautiful red Verona marble with natural white veins, the head displays a powerful and expressive modeling: deeply carved almond-shaped eyes, pronounced brow ridges, and a mouth forming the point of water flow. The mane is treated in stylized masses, very much in the Baroque style. This spittoon was embedded in the masonry and adorned a garden fountain of a palazzo.
